CLIENT PROJECT: Team Stimson Proposal Shortlisted for National Monument to Canada’s Mission in Afghanistan

We’ve been working on the project in the capacity of public art coordinators with Adrian Stimson and landscape architects the MBTW Group in creating a design for a monument that expresses Canada’s gratitude for the sacrifices made by Canadians who lost their lives or were injured, to examine and understand the mission and its impacts, to create a place where all people can gather to learn, reflect, remember and heal.

With the proposals now public on the Goverment of Canada website, I can share the good news that client Adrian Stimson’s (Team Stimson) proposal for the National Monument to Canada’s Mission in Afghanistan has been shortlisted along with 4 other national teams. The site of the monument will be in Ottawa, across from the War Museum, on the same side and set in an architectural dialogue with the National Holocaust Monument. The Team presented in May to a jury and representatives from the Canadian Heritage, Veterans Affairs Canada and National Capital Commission.

I was tasked with designing a digital strategy outline for the project. If the Team Stimson proposal is selected as the winning bid, we will also produce a robust online portal, that will include 360 and 3D elements, to augment the physical experience onsite as well as provide the opportunity for those who wish to visit ‘virtually.’ Additionally, this type of digital space will allow for an excellent educational resource.

Along with Adrian, the Team also includes the valued contribution of LeuWebb Projects, designers for site-specific artworks, and landscape architects MBTW Group.

Read more about the Team Stimson proposal here as well as access the other proposals here.

You can also participate in an national survey to contribute your thoughts on what such a monument should include here until June 9, 2021.
